Muriwai Gannet Colony
What: Muriwai Gannet Colony
Where: Auckland, NZ North Island
The Muriwai Gannet Colony is a protected breeding site located on the rugged west coast of Auckland, about 40 minutes’ drive from the city. From August to March, thousands of gannets nest on the cliffs, creating a dramatic wildlife spectacle. Visitors can walk to several viewing platforms that offer close-up views of the birds as well as sweeping outlooks over the black-sand beach and Tasman Sea. The colony is one of only a few mainland gannet colonies in New Zealand, making it a rare and accessible wildlife experience.
The site is part of Muriwai Regional Park, which is free to visit and open year-round. Walking tracks are well maintained, and the main viewing points are only a short walk from the car park. Outside of the gannet season, the area is still worth visiting for its coastal scenery, surf beach, and walking trails. The combination of birdlife and dramatic coastline makes it one of Auckland’s most popular nature spots.
