Auckland Sky Tower

What: Auckland Sky Tower

Where: Downtown Auckland, NZ North Island

Auckland’s Sky Tower rises above the city centre in the heart of downtown Auckland and is one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks. It’s easy to reach on foot from much of the CBD, or by public transport from elsewhere in the city, making it a natural stop for visitors exploring New Zealand’s largest city.

Standing at 328 metres tall, the Sky Tower has become a symbol of modern Auckland since opening in the late 1990s. It was originally built as part of the SkyCity entertainment complex and remains the tallest freestanding structure in the Southern Hemisphere. From the observation decks, you get panoramic views across the city, Auckland Harbour, Rangitoto Island and, on clear days, far beyond the city limits.

While it isn’t a geological attraction, the Sky Tower offers a different way to understand Auckland’s setting. The views reveal the city’s unique layout, built across a narrow isthmus and surrounded by water, with volcanic cones dotted across the landscape. Glass floor panels on the main observation level add a sense of height and drama for those willing to look straight down.

For thrill-seekers, the Sky Tower is also known for experiences like the SkyWalk and SkyJump, where visitors can step outside the tower or descend from its heights under controlled conditions. Whether admired from the ground or experienced from the top, the Sky Tower offers a striking perspective on Auckland and its surrounding environment.
