Upcoming Changes to the Skilled Migrant Category
The Government has announced significant changes to the Skilled Migrant Category, aiming to support employers in attracting and retaining the skilled workers essential for business growth.
Starting from mid-2026, two new Skilled Migrant Category pathways will be introduced to provide more targeted opportunities for skilled migrants.
1. Skilled Work Experience Pathway
Designed for migrants employed in skilled roles classified under ANZSCO levels 1-3.
Applicants must possess at least five years of directly relevant work experience.
Of this experience, a minimum of two years must be completed in New Zealand, with employment paid at least 1.1 times the median wage.
2. Trades and Technician Pathway
Targeted at migrants in specified trades or technician roles.
Applicants must have achieved at least a Level 4 qualification in their field.
A minimum of four years’ post-qualification experience is required, including at least 18 months of work in New Zealand paid at or above the median wage.
