Changes to New Zealand's Pathway Student Visa
From 20 July 2026, Immigration New Zealand has introduced several improvements to the Pathway Student Visa, giving eligible international students more flexibility when planning their education in New Zealand.
What is the Pathway Student Visa?
The Pathway Student Visa allows international students to complete up to three consecutive programmes of study on a single visa, provided they form part of an approved education pathway. This means students can progress through different qualifications without needing to apply for a new student visa at every stage.
What's Changed?
More flexibility for Year 12 and 13 students
Students finishing secondary school now have greater freedom if their study plans change. While applicants must still identify their intended qualification, subject area and education provider when applying, the visa conditions will now only specify the qualification and education provider, making it easier to adjust the field of study without needing a new visa.
Increased number of lower-level study pathways
The visa has been expanded to include additional study options. Students can now use a Pathway Student Visa for programmes that lead to, or move between, New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework (NZQCF) Levels 1 to 4, opening up more opportunities for vocational and foundation-level study.
Longer English language study
Eligible first-time Pathway Student Visa holders can now spend up to 30 weeks studying English before progressing to the next qualification in their approved pathway. Previously, this was limited to 20 weeks. This change gives students more time to strengthen their language skills before beginning further study.

Whether progressing from school to tertiary education, completing vocational qualifications, or improving English language skills before moving on to further study, the revised Pathway Student Visa offers greater flexibility than before.
The changes took effect on 20 July 2026 and apply to eligible applicants meeting the existing visa requirements.
