Wētā Cave

What: Wētā Cave

Where: Wellington, NZ North Island

The Wētā Cave is the retail and exhibition space for Wētā Workshop, the world-famous design studio behind movies like The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, Avatar, and District 9. Located in the Wellington suburb of Miramar, the Cave serves as a mini-museum where visitors can see props, collectibles, and behind-the-scenes displays from some of the studio’s most iconic projects. The space also includes a shop filled with film merchandise, models, and artwork created by Wētā artists.

In addition to browsing the Cave, visitors can book guided tours that take you inside Wētā Workshop itself to see how props, costumes, and special effects are made. The tours provide insight into the creativity and craftsmanship that go into blockbuster films, with guides sharing stories and showing real examples of work in progress. It’s an engaging experience for movie fans and anyone interested in design, filmmaking, or creative industries.

And best of all, the Cave itself is totally free to visit!
