Larnach Castle
What: Larnach Castle
Where: Dunedin, NZ South Island
Larnach Castle, often described as New Zealand’s only castle, is a historic mansion built in 1871 by businessman and politician William Larnach. Set on the Otago Peninsula, the Gothic Revival–style building features finely crafted interiors, antiques, and artworks that showcase the wealth and taste of the period. The surrounding grounds are just as impressive, with 35 acres of gardens that have been recognised by the New Zealand Gardens Trust as a Garden of International Significance.
Today the castle is privately owned and open to the public for self-guided or guided tours. Visitors can explore the restored rooms, learn about the Larnach family’s fascinating and sometimes tragic history, and enjoy sweeping views of the Otago Peninsula from the castle’s tower.
A café and accommodation are also available on site, making it easy to spend a few hours or even a night at the property. Entry fees apply, with separate tickets available for the castle, the gardens, or both together.
