Things To Do In New Zealand: Hokitika Gorge

What: Hokitika Gorge

Where: Kokatahi, South Island, NZ

Located along New Zealand's picturesque West Coast, Hokitika Gorge is one of the country's most instantly recognisable scenes. Azure waters meet stark limestone cliffs and dense green rainforest making Hokitika Gorge a must-visit location in the South Island.

Glaciers helped to grind the limestone rock sediment that is essential for highlighting the water's super blue colour. Glaciers also carved their way through the white granite bedrock, strengthening the waters' colour and carving the landscape to create the photographic gem that Hokitika Gorge is today.

A well-maintained forest trail allows this natural haven to be one of the country's most accessible tourist spots, open to all visitors regardless of the season. The walkway is 2.4km in length (approximately 1.5 hours in and out) and is pushchair and child-friendly, meaning the whole family can marvel at Hokitika Gorge's unparalleled beauty.
