Job overview
Support class staff to manage students' needs: observing students in class, designing a programme that may support the student overcome barriers identified.
Meet with whanau to discuss their aspirations for their child and explore ways they can support them to achieve these.
Observe student in a workplace situation as part of their transition and identify and resolve barriers.
Work with agencies supporting the whanau out of school to align strategies where possible.
Work related and educational occupations: eye-hand coordination, visual perception, hand function. Following class routines, sensory processing.
Play and leisure occupations: social skills, play skills.
Life skills and personal care occupations: feeding, toileting, drinking, dressing and undressing, shopping, food preparation.
Accessing recreational activities: accessing the environment - mobility including walking, running, swimming, using a wheelchair, seating, assistive equipment e.g. a ramp, a change table, a hoist, a digital device.
Transportation related: applying for SESTA assistance to get to and from school, applying for safety equipment e.g. seatbelts buckle guards, harnesses, booster seats, head rests, training staff on the use of the equipment, monitoring changes in the students' needs in transport and making appropriate requests.
Organisation information
The employer is a state, specialist, co-educational school for students aged between five and twenty one years who have intellectual, physical, emotional and/or behavioural needs preventing them from learning satisfactorily when in full time regular mainstream classrooms. The school is a Decile Five school in a mixed socio-economic area situated within a multicultural community. Students require and receive an integrated programme of education and therapy from a multi-disciplinary team. The teaching focus is to provide an individualised learning programme with high staff to pupil ratios to ensure students' needs are met and behaviours are managed appropriately. The students are drawn from a wide catchment area from Te Horo to Wellington and Hutt Valley, through referral from numerous community and government agencies.
Applicant Requirements
Must be a fully qualified Occupational Therapist.
Must have a clean driver's licence and access to a vehicle.
Registration Requirements
Be a member of The Occupational Therapy Board of New Zealand or be eligible to be a member.
