What sparked your initial desire to emigrate?
The prospect of less stress, a better work/life balance, a warmer climate and I needed a fresh start.
What about NZ appealed to you?
The scenery, an outdoor lifestyle and the laid-back approach to life.
What initial steps did you take when exploring your move?
I started by Googling the countries where my trade (scaffolding) was most required. I found that Australia and New Zealand were my top 2 destinations to work and live.
What next steps did you take?
I contacted NZ Skills in Demand and filled out their online application form.
Did New Zealand Skills in Demand assist you in securing a job?
Yes, Skills in Demand were instrumental in helping me find a job. They supported me with regular updates, calls and any assistance I needed as I was working a very busy job with long hours at the time, which made things a lot easier and less stressful. I always felt comfortable knowing they were in the background.
What was the interview process like?
I found it very laid-back; there was no pressure and it was done via zoom, even with the time difference. I found it relatively easy.
How did you find the visa application process?
Absolutely brilliant! The case manager Michael Cook from Migration Associates was so consistent with his contact. Any problems that we came across would be remedied straight away. It was very stress free.
Borey Chum also supported me through the whole process from start to finish and again made me feel at ease, no pressure. The initial contact was very thorough in what was going to happen step by step and he was always there if I needed a chat again. He gave regular contact and I could not have done it without Borey or anyone from NZSID/MA.
Borey also picked me up from the airport with a welcome bag and assisted me in the first few days of landing in NZ to help me settle in. I felt this was great and, after, he was there for the full 90 days again with regular contact and meet-ups to see how things are going.
Was there anything particularly difficult about your application that Migration Associates helped you through?
I was fortunate enough to not have any difficulties during the process.
How did you find the process of telling your family and friends?
It was initially hard, but they understood the reasons why I needed to do it and supported my move. They were very excited for me.
How was the big move itself?
Initially it was a little bit stressful as I had to sell/donate some household possessions in order to move, but it was genuinely worth it to be where I am now.
How are you finding life now you’re in NZ?
So much better! My life is a lot less hectic and now I actually get time for myself to enjoy life more. I am enjoying exploring NZ and finding new hobbies for myself.
What do you miss most from home? And what are you enjoying most about NZ?
I miss the social bar scene, and sports events. I also miss being able to jump on a plane and visit Europe within 2 hours.
However, I’m loving NZ for the people - they are a lot friendlier and laid-back. In NZ, there’s less people, less traffic and I feel like I have more freedom to do more stuff.
What is one piece of advice you would give someone considering moving to NZ?
Just do it! Don’t let people cloud your judgement. Don’t just let it be a thought, just do it. It’s so worth it and you won’t look back. Just take the risk.
