CASE STUDY: JACOBUS AND ROXANNE DU PLESSIS
30/06/2026
METAL FABRICATOR WELDER
ACCREDITED EMPLOYER WORK VISA
What sparked your initial desire to emigrate?
Our initial desire to emigrate was sparked by the pursuit of safety and family security, a safe and clean environment to live and grow in, a better work-life balance, and the pursuit of job security.
What about NZ appealed to you?
New Zealand promotes a healthy work-life balance, a high-quality lifestyle, has a safe environment to live in, and has such beautiful and natural landscapes.
What initial steps did you take when exploring your move?
We did tons of research and spoke extensively to our family living in New Zealand and South Africa, as well as preparing ourselves emotionally and financially for the journey we were setting ourselves up for. Once we had done all of our research and weighed up all of our options, we reached out to Skills in Demand and Migration Associates for information and the steps that are required in order for us to start our journey to New Zealand. At the same time, we were also going through all the research and steps involved to bring another vital family member with us, our dog, Maya-Bee.
What next steps did you take?
We communicated in depth with Borey from Skills in Demand and Michael from Migration Associates about what was required from us to embark on this process. Many emails, calls and messages later, we were comprehensively informed on the steps that we needed to take. At the same time, we started wrapping up and getting our personal affairs in order, in South Africa.
Regarding Maya-Bee, after loads of emails, calls and multiple vet appointments, we were well on track with Maya-Bee’s travel arrangements as well.
How did you find the job search?
Skills in Demand assisted me with securing a job and walked with me throughout the entire process.
What was the interview process like?
Borey provided me with all the information and loads of assistance through each step of the process. He ensured that I was adequately informed and prepped for my interview. Due to all of this amazing help, the interview was successful (despite how nervous I was).
How did you find the visa application process?
This is a lengthy and stressful process for any person embarking on this journey, however, Michael from Migration Associates was truly remarkable. He was by our side for the entire process. Due to his incredible assistance, he made sure every step was reached smoothly, that we were well informed and prepared for the journey ahead, and we were in constant communication which provided us with reassurance. Michael answered every question we had, he was incredibly knowledgeable, and he always provided us with reassurance when we were unsure about something. The personal attention and touch was evident in every interaction we had with him.
Was there anything particularly difficult about your application that Migration Associates helped you through?
They helped us with everything! Emigrating is not for the faint of heart. From all the personal documents that we needed to gather, the medicals that were required, and all the legal paperwork and processes, and so much more that was required from us, Borey and Michael were with us every step of the way.
How did you find the process of telling your family and friends?
This was incredibly emotional. We made a rule to not say ‘good-bye’, instead we would say ‘see you soon’. Our decision to emigrate was a multifaceted decision, which included not only provided us with a better future and retirement, but also assisting our parents with one.
How was the big move itself?
The move was a rollercoaster of emotions. My wife and I were apart for two months, and our Maya-Bee had to embark on her own flights alone, as well as a two-week quarantine period. This two and a half month period was incredibly hard and stressful for the three of us, but felt so rewarding when we were all back together again.
We felt thrilled for a fresh start, a sense of adventure and excitement for what laid ahead, a sense of accomplishment and pride for making the decision for a better life and relief for finally reaching the long awaited point where we were actually moving, but at the same time, we felt immigrant guilt, a sense of mourning and grief, and heartbreak for our loved ones that had to stay behind.
How are you finding life now you’re in NZ?
We are settling in well and adjusting to our new environment. We are creating a new home, building daily routines, learning and experiencing the new cultures and way of life, as well as exploring the beautiful environment around us. We are so grateful to be here and experience all the wonders New Zealand has to offer.
What do you miss most from home? And what are you enjoying most about NZ?
Without a doubt, we are definitely missing our regular treats: biltong and koeksisters. And of course, our loved ones.
We are enjoying exploring the beautiful landscapes around us, taking Maya-Bee to the beach, and we are enjoying the adventure of trying all the new food.
What is one piece of advice you would give someone considering moving to NZ?
Be courageous so take the leap and DO IT!
The road to get here may be filled with doubt and challenges, so ensure you have an amazing support team (family and friends), that you get your personal affairs in order, get in contact with Skills in Demand and Migration Associates, and as they say: grab the bull by the horns!
