INZ Announces Significant Changes to the Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa
Immigration New Zealand has announced significant changes to the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) Resident Visa, introducing new pathways that may make residence more accessible for many skilled workers. If you have previously looked at residence options but did not qualify under the existing points system, these changes could present a new opportunity.
New Residence Pathways Introduced
In addition to some changes to the existing 6-point Skilled Migrant Category pathway, Immigration New Zealand has introduced two other pathways:
Skilled Work Experience Pathway
You may qualify if you have:
At least 5 years of relevant skilled work experience, and
Earnings of at least 1.1 times the median wage
Trades and Technician Pathway
You may qualify if you have:
A relevant qualification
At least 4 years of relevant skilled work experience
Earnings at or above the median wage
These new pathways have been introduced to recognise the value of skilled work experience and provide more flexible routes to residence.
Why This Matters
Many people who could not previously meet the 6-point threshold may now have alternative pathways available to them.
