Things To Do In New Zealand: That Wānaka Tree
What: That Wānaka Tree
Where: Southern End of Lake Wānaka, Otago Region, NZ
Growing alone in Lake Wānaka, 'That Wānaka Tree' has been described as New Zealand's most famous tree and appears to be floating on the surface of the water. A photograph of the willow won the 2014 New Zealand Geographic photo of the year.
What began as a willow fencepost over 80 years ago has sprouted into one of New Zealand's greatest natural illusions. The tree's delicately curved trunk seemingly grows straight out of the Wanaka river, sitting in front of the breath-taking Southern Alps.
Visitors to the area can also explore the nearby Mount Aspiring National Park, which hosts a range of activities such as valley walks, mountain trails, jet boating and heli-skiing.
