Things To Do In New Zealand: Devil’s Bath
What: Devil’s Bath
Where: Waiotapu Thermal Wonderland, Rotorua, North Island
Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland in New Zealand boasts an array of bubbling geothermal features, but one of the most fascinating is also one of the calmest. The Devil's Bath, with its vivid neon-green hue and distinctive sulfuric scent, is a striking natural phenomenon.
A network of well-maintained trails guide you through the Geothermal Wonderland, featuring bubbling mud pools, steaming vents, and colourful hot springs. Among these natural spectacles, the Devil's Bath stands out as a highlight. It is a crater lake renowned for its luminous green colour, which can vary from lime green to fluorescent yellow, depending on lighting and mineral concentrations. This unusual natural colouration results from deposits of sulphur and ferrous salts suspended in the water. The pool's surface often emits steam, adding to its truly distinctive appearance.
The attraction is a direct result of the high levels of geo-thermal activity in the area, and is set amongst 11 square miles of rich geysers and colourful lakes.
