Rotorua

What: Rotorua Geothermal Park

Where: Rotorua, NZ North Island

Known for its bubbling mud pools, spouting geysers and strong ties to Māori culture, Rotorua is one of the most distinctive destinations in Aotearoa.

Set in the heart of the North Island’s volcanic plateau, Rotorua is a geothermal hotspot where nature performs on a grand scale. Steam rises from the ground, the air carries the tang of sulphur, and colourful mineral terraces fringe hot lakes and craters. At Te Puia, just minutes from the town centre, you’ll find the mighty Pōhutu Geyser—erupting up to 30 metres high—as well as bubbling mud, silica terraces and the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute, where visitors can learn about carving, weaving and traditional culture.

Rotorua is also home to several natural hot springs and spas, including the lakeside Polynesian Spa, known for its soothing mineral waters. For a free experience, Kuirau Park in the city centre offers steaming geothermal pools, crater lakes and public footbaths.

Beyond the geothermal, Rotorua offers outdoor adventures in every direction. Walk or cycle through the towering redwoods of Whakarewarewa Forest, take a treetop canopy walk, or visit the Wingspan National Bird of Prey Centre to see native falcons up close. You can even tour a working sheep farm at the Agrodome, complete with dog shows and kiwi conservation work.

Whether you're after volcanic landscapes, Māori heritage, or relaxing hot pools, Rotorua is a place where culture and geology come together in unforgettable ways.
