Job overview

  • Support class staff to identify students' communication needs and to design interventions to meet the students' needs.

  • Meet with families to understand family's aspirations for their child and support them to realise these.

  • Work with agencies supporting the whanau out of school to align strategies where possible.

  • Play skills and social interactions - attention, participation, eye-contact, cause and effect, turn taking, and sequencing skills.

  • Cognitive development through play and functional experience of the environment, 'learning routines and their meaning'.

  • Learning to be an intentional communicator.

  • Using a student's preferred assistive technology to teach meanings, sequencing and give opportunities for students with limited or no spoken language to communicate a message.

  • Coaching supporting adults how to best adapt their communication to maximise successful social interaction, working as a part of a team.

  • Identifying the function of behaviour- supporting students to replace inappropriate behaviours with more acceptable and successful way to communicate.

  • Directly targeting the development of speech where appropriate.

  • Managing issues around students with hearing loss.

  • Managing issues around students with swallowing disorders and individual feeding plans.

  • Transfer of skills to functional use across environments to improve independence.

  • Manage communication devices: Support students and whanau through TALKLINK trials and applications

Organisation information

The School and Resource Centre is a state, specialist, co-educational school for students aged between five and twenty one years who have intellectual, physical, emotional and/or behavioural needs preventing them from learning satisfactorily when in full time regular mainstream classrooms. The school is a Decile Five school in a mixed socio-economic area situated within a multicultural community. Students require and receive an integrated programme of education and therapy from a multi-disciplinary team. The teaching focus is to provide an individualised learning programme with high staff to pupil ratios to ensure students' needs are met and behaviours are managed appropriately. The students are drawn from a wide catchment area from Te Horo to Wellington and Hutt Valley, through referral from numerous community and government agencies.

Applicant Requirements

  • Must be a fully qualified Speech Language Therapist.

  • Have a clean driver's licence and access to vehicle.

Registration Requirements

Be eligible for membership to the New Zealand Speech Language Therapist Association.
